Notes on Gender Role Transition

The Gendered Self-- Further commentary on the transsexual phenomenon

Chapter 3. Living the Lie: Unlived Lives, Guilt and Shame

Anne Vitale Ph.D.
Abstract

This chapter looks at three of the major components in a transsexual's life prior to treatment. The first (Unlived Lives) deals with the frustration and dissociation essentially defining gender dysphoria. The second and third, guilt and shame respectively, while related to the first, have more to do with cultural expectations and the inability of the transsexual, no matter how morally strong, to live up to their own expectations. It is this burden that finally sends the individual into therapy and --for some-- full or partial gender role transition.
